URC applauds Gov. Whitmer’s 2023 budget recommendations

LANSING, Mich. – Britany Affolter-Caine, executive director of Michigan’s University Research Corridor (URC), released the following statement applauding the 2023 budget recommendations announced today by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer:

“The University Research Corridor applauds Governor Whitmer’s proposed 5% increase in state funding to Michigan’s public universities and colleges for fiscal year 2023 and an extra 5% one-time payment using surplus tax funds and $200 million for deferred maintenance of campus buildings and information technology systems.

“If passed, this funding would be the largest increase to higher education in two decades. That extra money would help our economy, communities, and residents by making higher education accessible to more students, creating more of the high-demand graduates that our businesses and industries need to thrive. Michigan’s URC – an affiliation of Michigan State University, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University, Michigan’s three major research universities – would see critical efforts supported that would spur greater growth in research and development in areas such as mobility, medicine and smart manufacturing.

“With greater investment, Michigan can increase its competitiveness and attract and retain top companies with a strong supply of high demand talent and capacity for innovation. We look forward to working with our partners in the legislature and Governor Whitmer on making this plan a reality.”
